Trailer For Angelina Jolie's Netflix Film "First They Killed My Father" Released
Angelina Jolie's upcoming Netflix-release film, First They Killed My Father just had its first trailer released. It is based upon a memoir by Loung Ung, a woman who grew up in Cambodia during the regime of notorious and reviled dictator, Pol Pot. His regime, the Khmer Rouge, was responsible for the deaths of almost a quarter of the population of Cambodia. They were the followers of the Communist Party in Cambodia, and starved, executed, and abused the people of the nation.
First They Killed My Father documents the life of Loung Ung as she grew up in Phnom Penh, where her father worked in the government. The Khmer Rouge stormed the city and overthrew the government there in the early 1970's. Her family fled the city during the overthrow, but Loung Ung was eventually captured and put in an orphan camp where she was trained to be a child soldier. They would be used to fight the invading army of Vietnam.
Jolie has already had an impressive career in directing, especially films documenting real-world atrocities and historical events. Her first film, In the Land of Blood and Honey, dealt with the nightmarish horrors of the Bosnian War. Unbroken as an adaptation of a novel about American pilots captured by the Japanese during World War II. The writer of the novel was Lauren Hillenbrand, and she documented the life of Louis Zamperini. The film received some Oscar nods, and it featured a lot of harsh scenes of torture and suffering.
Vanity Fair actually spotlighted a weird game that Jolie was playing with orphans in the process of casting for this film that involved tests of lying and stealing. The full story by Vanity Fair is lengthy and talks about a lot more than this weird instance in the casting process. Screen Rant explains it pretty well, and Jolie has actually caught a lot of flak for it.
Anyway, the film is slated to come out at some point this year. You can watch the trailer below; it looks very promising.
