It was the Battle of the Summertime Premieres as NBC and ABC pitted a number of their summer premieres against each other on Thursday night. When the dust settled, NBC won that battle on the strength of the season premiere of The Wall and the weakness from an underperforming Boy Band series premiere from ABC. Perhaps the biggest winners of the night were Fox and CBS, as Fox topped primetime ratings in the key 18-49 demographic, and CBS recorded the most total viewers.
Fox came first in ratings with a 0.9 rating/4 share in the key advertiser-friendly demo, but 4th in total viewers with an average of 3 million. Beat Shazam at 8 p.m. earned a 1.0 rating/4 share and 3.2 million viewers; and Love Connection earned a 0.9 rating/4 share and 2.9 million viewers.
NBC came second in ratings with a 0.8 rating/4 share with an average of 3.9 million viewers. Hollywood Game Night at 8 p.m. earned a 0.8 rating/4 share and 3.8 million viewers; The Wall at 9 p.m. earned a 0.9 rating /4 share and 4.4 million viewers; and The Night Shift's season premiere at 10 p.m. earned a 0.6 rating/3 share and 3.5 million viewers.
CBS and ABC tied for third in ratings, both with a 0.7 rating/3 share, with CBS first in total viewers with 4.1 million (all reruns) and ABC third with 3.2 million viewers.
ABC's Boy Band at 8 p.m. averaged a 0.7 rating/3 share and 3 million viewers, with The Gong Show at 10 premiering to a 0.9 rating/4 share and 3.8 million viewers.
Ratings for other networks that night: Telemundo was 5th in ratings with a 0.6 rating/3 share and 1.5 million viewers; Univision was sixth with a 0.5 rating/2 share and 1.4 million viewers; and The CW was seventh in ratings with a 0.3 rating/1 share and 1.2 million viewers (all repeats).
