'Gypsy': Netflix Cancels Thriller-Drama Series After One Season
Netflix has announced that thriller-drama series Gypsy will not be returning for a second season.
The streaming service's series focused on therapist Jean Holloway (Naomi Watts)as she develops dangerous and intimate personal relationships with the people in her patients' lives. The series also starred Billy Crudup, Sophie Cookson, Karl Glusman and Poorna Jagannathan.
The series was met with a less-than-amazing response from both critics and viewers alike. Rotten Tomatoes gave the first season of Gypsy a 26% "Rotten" rating based on 27 reviews, with an average rating of 4.6/10; and Metacritic rates the season 45 out of 100, based on 21 critics with an indicator of "mixed or average reviews".
The series was also criticized by a number of Romanian organizations for its title, which many Romani people consider to be an ethnic slur due to its historical use in violence against them.
Gypsy was written by Lisa Rubin and directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson (Fifty Shades of Grey), Victoria Mahoney and Coky Giedroyc. Universal Television handled production, with the series executive produced by Rubin, Watts, Sean Jablonski, and Liza Chasin.
