AEW Dark Star Denies Prank Calling Wrestlers About Death of Friend

The most recent episode of AEW Dark on YouTube featured just one match, as Billy Gunn took on Shawn Spears in the shorter-than-usual show. Now, AEW has advertised two matches for next week's Dark. Penelope Ford will face off against Anna Jay, with Kip Sabian in Ford's corner. Cody Rhodes will fight Joe Alonzo in the second match. AEW announced the matches on Twitter.

AEW Dark Star Lashes Out at Social Justice Warriors

Joe Alonzo took to Twitter to lash out at "social justice warriors" on the day his Dark match was announced. In a tweet captioned, "I'm only going to say this once," Alonzo posted, "It's real convenient that the day my AEW Dark match is announced I get accused of some bullshit. My track record shows that everything I have ever done was for clout and never have I been an anonymous troll. But I will say this. I have never and would I ever call someone and joke about one of their family members dying. That's completely f***ed up, sick, and completely disgusting. I hope the actual person that did this gets caught. And when they do, all of you social justice warriors can tweet out publicly to apologize."

It turns out that Alonzo is referring to a post on Facebook by Dylan Dunbar, which alleges, "Last night, a bunch of people within the wrestling industry received a late night phone call, from a sobbing person informing us that a good friend had died in an accident. Turns out, it was just a really f***ed up prank call, thankfully. After talking with a bunch of people who received the same phone call, I feel very confident in saying that it was Joe Alonzo that made these phone calls. Imagine being such a attention-starved bitch that you prank call people in the dead of night, and tell them a loved one has died in an accident, as a f***ing joke. I hope you get what's coming to you, Joe. That shit was despicable."

The Bottom Line' Cause Chad Said So

AEW has lost in same-day viewership with Dynamite vs. NXT two weeks in a row, even though Dynamite still came out on top both times in the ratings. Dynamite has also featured a lot of squash matches as the company is trying to stretch out its pre-taped content as long as possible. But by dumping two of those squash matches on AEW Dark, does that mean AEW is gearing up for more tapings?

Thanks to the pioneering efforts of Vince McMahon, WWE, and Linda McMahon's Republican SuperPac, pro wrestling is considered an essential business in the state of Florida. That means AEW could return to the state and tape more shows if they want to. With a PPV coming up in May ratings taking a hit from the lack of top stars weekly, it might behoove AEW to follow in WWE's footsteps and open back up a little bit in Florida.
