Frieren: Beyond Journey's End Season 1 Ep. 17: When The Path Diverges

Crunchyroll's Frieren: Beyond Journey's End S01E17: "Take Care" sees the paths start separating - and someone needs to decide which way to go.

This year started off well with a new episode of Crunchyroll's Frieren: Beyond Journey's End, "Take Care," where the paths start separating, and someone has to decide which side to take. Once again, another beautiful episode that highlights friendship and the importance of support in someone's life. Once again, we get a wonderful balance between the present and the past; as we all know, getting to see more of Frieren's past and Himmel is always a treat.

The episode continues where the last one left off: Sein is faced with the reality that he now has to take a different path if he chooses to go after his best friend, Gorilla. As he decides whether to stay with Frieren's party or reunite with Gorilla, the weather starts taking a bit of a turn, and our adventurers get stuck in the village for about a month while the storm passes. Although thankfully this time, they are in a nicer cabin with more space and a small village to explore while the storm hits. When they get into the cabin, Frieren comments on how cold Fern's hands are; when Stark becomes interested, she touches his cheek, startling him. And thus, our new stay begins.

The thing about staying in a town in a bigger cabin this time around also means they spend most of their time separated, running about, and connecting with locals as well. However, as is always the case, they have the most mundane and relatable problems between them; I love how human this show can be. This time it was Stark who placed his hand on Fern's cheek in surprise, but we find out what got her angry this time: how scary it was when he held her back so tight. Of course, Frieren looks to Sein to mediate, and he does. Soon enough, the time to take separate ways arrives, and they part quickly. Kindda bittersweet, but coming from a group of very awkward characters, I expected nothing less. I wish they would have had a least a dinner or something. I am glad Frieren and Sen got to have a nice conversation before parting ways, and I think the bond between them has grown since they started.

But on their way to Äußerst they go, however, Fern gets sick, and they have to stop to get ingredients for remedies Sein had left for them. It was very sweet to see how Frieren still thinks of Fern as a kid, which embarrasses Fern in front of Stark. As they go looking for ingredients, Stark asks why she holds Fern's hands like a kid when she is sick, and they have a very nice conversation in which Frieren and she remember how Himmel taught her about how people need support even as adults as he cared for her once, too. She then promises to care for Stark if he ever gets sick. While not much happened, it was a very sweet episode focusing on friendship and support. I love how this show is able to focus on these things without being heavy-handed. I cannot wait for them to explore the city of magic as the intro hints at new characters joining them.
