Killer Klowns Director Offers Update on Sequel Series Development

Killer Klowns from Outer Space director Stephen Chiodo and brothers Charles & Edward have some ideas on where to go with a sequel series.

The good news is the creative minds and stars behind the 1988 cult classic horror Killer Klowns from Outer Space are working on a legacy sequel miniseries. The bad news is there are a few obstacles in the way, according to director Stephen Chiodo. Speaking with SFX Magazine, Chiodo, who worked on the original script with his brothers Charles & Edward Chiodo, not only had an idea going but also reunited with the film's star (now film producer) Grant Cramer on the concept. It's an idea they've been developing for years, waiting for the perfect opportunity.

What's Stopping a 'Killer Klowns from Outer Space' Sequel

"My goal is to do an eight-part miniseries for streamers," Stephen said. Aside from a suitor, there's also an issue with its rights as it resides with the Amazon-owned MGM. There was a short film released in 2022 as fans got to celebrate the franchise for Universal Studios theme park's Halloween Horror Nights along with the recent game. We've got a great concept that continues the story of our main characters. We'll follow a new group of teenagers who come upon the clowns and meet a drunk living in his van – it's Mike Tobacco. There's a big invasion, and we end up on the clown planet. We have lots of great ideas about where this universe goes," he grins. "You haven't even seen the clown animals on the clown planet yet. There's a whole world of things that we have in mind!"

The plot of the original Killer Klowns from Outer Space follows a small town as they're terrorized by extraterrestrials with supernatural powers looking to feast on its residents, consuming them after wrapping their victims in a cotton candy cocoon when they're not killing them in a cartoon-like fashion. With a budget of $2 million, the film performed well at the box office topped $43 million. The film also starred Suzanne Snyder, John Allen Nelson, John Vernon, Michael Siegel, Peter Licassi, Royal Dano, and Christopher Titus.
