'Killing Eve' S02, ep06: "I Hope You Like Missionary!" Starts Kinky, Ends Terrifying (SPOILER REVIEW)

Every once in a while, I get to see a performance that I know in my heart is going to win an award, or awards, or all the awards.

I saw one of those performances tonight on Killing Eve, BBC America's outstanding international assassin thriller.

Jodie Comer has been riveting since the beginning of the series as Villanelle, a Russian assassin with a penchant for very unusual kills. She also has a shared fascination with an MI6 investigator who has been tracking her named Eve (Sandra Oh).

The two have been playing cat and mouse with each other, each taking the aggressor role over the other, since about half way through season one, culminating with Eve stabbing Villanelle at the end of said season.

Now, season 2 has led a merry chase through Europe, with Eve trying to not only elude Villanelle, but figure out the motives behind a new assassin that her team has dubbed the Ghost, since everything that this new assassin does is so hard to trace.

"I Hope You Like Missionary!" takes an interesting turn, as Eve and Carolyn (Fiona Shaw) decide to enlist Villanelle in an effort to get an insider perspective into the life of Aaron Peel (Henry Lloyd-Hughes), who they suspect was responsible for the murder of his father (as well as many others).

Villanelle decides to do so by making friends with Aaron's sister Amber (Shannon Tarbet), and does so by working through a number of personas and accents before finally settling on "Billie", an obnoxious American. Watching Comer work out these characters, first British, then Australian, before hitting the American character was an absolute scream- each accent was dead to rights, and Comer does some heavy lifting throughout the episode in her new persona.

Let's look at some spoilers!

Aside from Comer's electrifying performance we were treated to some amazing work from Fiona Shaw, who manages to eke out the biggest payoff from the smallest lines. Carolyn may not always have the most to say, but she often has the biggest impact with what is said.

Niko (Owen McDonnell) returns home after his encounter with Villanelle, which leads to an intense liaison with Eve- she's thrilled with his new-found edge, but he's disturbed by the whole affair, and moves out.

The big mistake Niko makes, though, is deciding to crash on Gemma's (Emma Pierson) couch. Eve shows up to "drop off his things", but ends up ransacking Gemma's room before confronting the other woman. There's a touch of Villanelle at play here, and it's a bit horrifying to see how Eve is changing.

We saw hints of it last week when she almost pushed a man into an oncoming train before coming to her senses. The siren call of the mass murderer is growing stronger, and Eve appears to be entranced.

There were several other Villanelle moments that were downright electrifying. First, she uses her "Billie" persona to make friends with Poole's sister, but brutally murders a bodyguard in an effortless, nonchalant shrug.

Villanelle then joins the Peel siblings for dinner, and manages to catch Aaron Peel off guard. He's a bully, and she manages to stay completely in character even while he's grilling her on her cover.

The final act of the episode, though, was perhaps the most unerving. Villanelle stalks two women through the streets at night, banging on things and freaking the women out- then runs up ahead to join them, so they can all be safer. It's all the more chilling because that's where the episode ends, and Villanelle has just been asking if any kind of meat could be used to make shawarma.

There are only two episodes left to this season of Killing Eve, and I'm really at my wit's end over what could happen next.

On Sunday, May 19th, BBC America and AMC will be releasing the next episode of Killing Eve, titled "Wide Awake". Here's a peak:
