My Hero Academia S07E08 "Two Flashfires" Brings Big Heat: Review

Crunchyroll's My Hero Academia Season 7 Episode 8: "Two Flashfires" offered a look into Dabi's backstory, intense action, and so much more.

The latest episode of Crunchyroll's My Hero Academia, S07E08: "Two Flashfires" gives us a look into Dabi's life after three Todorokis. It was a heartbreaking episode in which siblings are facing each other in a battle in which only one will come out alive. What I liked the most about this episode was that even though it tells Dabi's backstory, building off of what we have seen before and making you feel you are him – it does not make any excuses for him or what he has done to innocent people. Something that tends to turn me off from a lot of stories is when they try to make you feel too much for the Villains. My Hero Academia has always managed to thread the thin line carefully and not seem to make apologies for the bad guys, perfectly showing why these characters ended up taking a turn at some point in their lives. Showing humanity at its best and its worst. The good, the bad, the sad, and the ugly.

The episode shows the battle between Shoto and Dabi as Dabi sets the world on fire around them while Doctor Garaki tells the story about how Dabi ended up with All For One. It was AFO's hope to have Dabi initially become an ally, but they were not successful in turning him into a Nomu, and neither were they able to control him. We have already seen how unpredictable he really is. However, it was the realization that his childhood home was just as toxic as it was the years before when he was left for dead. I have a lot of thoughts about Endeavor and Dabi and how much I dislike them. This one is definitely all on Endeavor, and we should not lose sight of what he did to his family. That said, I am glad we have seen the Todorokis working toward a healthier pattern.

Dabi, on the other side, has been keeping himself alive purely with the fire of hate and the hopes and dreams of facing Endeavor and his ultimate project, Shoto. It was pretty sad just seeing them go to blows and Dabi wasting his own body to the fire, ready to die. The part I hate the most about it is that Shoto has to face his own brother for something he could not control, as we have seen he went through Endeavor's abuse too. Ughh, these moments I really hate Endeavor.

I was very proud of Shoto, though, and how far he has come along. He managed to end that fight swiftly, freezing Dabi and everything around. Another thing My Hero Academia has been great at is showing the mental struggles of heroes as well as having a very inspiring main character. I love that Deku has shown so many aspects of himself and his humanity, inspiring others around him. Thanks to Deku's words, it was what Shoto needed to realize his power is his' not Endeavor's. It was an unfortunate ending, and it makes me wish Dabi had a better past to avoid this. However, it was very scary how they animated Dabi becoming pretty much just a skull as he burned. It was a very impacting episode that made me cringe, imagining how much worse things can get moving forward.
