Rick and Morty Creative Team Podcast Breaks Down Never Ricking Morty

Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland's dimension-hopping duo Rick and Morty found themselves dropped on their collective "meta" heads as they went stage-diving through the fourth, fifth and possibly sixth walls (if that exists) in midseason opener "Never Ricking Morty", and they have director Erica Hayes and writer Jeff Loveness to thank for it. In our review earlier this week, we spoke about how the episode felt like a creative primal scream (you can check out the link to our review below), a layered attack on our senses and perceptions of the series that left us questioning things even after 3-1/2 seasons, but also with a better appreciation of just how hard it is to keep the Rick and Morty train on the tracks (and how it might be driving them slightly mad).

Earlier this week, Harmon and Loveness discussed the literary devices that were dissected during the return outing as well as their deep-seated obsession with the phrase "***-gutters." Following up on that, Hayes opened up about her professional journey from coffee barista to series storyboard artist to her new title as director this season.

Harmon, Roiland, and Adult Swim released an episode titles announcement video that gave a nice "wink-and-a-nod" to The Terminator before revealing the following loaded episode names (with loglines included). Beginning with return episode "Never Ricking Morty," we have "Promortyus" (Get off my face, broth), "The Vat of Acid Episode" (The one with the acid vat, broth), "Childrick of Mort" (Miracle of life, broth. Whole family in this one, broh.), and "Star Mort Rickturn of the Jerri" (Parenting is crazy, broh. Stuff straight disappearin in this one).
