Superman: Legacy: No Costume Reveal Before Filming Start; Streaky/DCU?

Superman: Legacy writer/director James Gunn confirmed there won't be a costume reveal before filming starts; Streaky the Supercat in the DCU?

Article Summary

  • James Gunn confirms no Superman costume reveal before March 2024 filming start.
  • 'Superman: Legacy' set for Summer 2025 premiere with star-studded cast.
  • Streaky the Supercat not slated for DCU appearance in the near future.
  • Gunn clarifies misinformation on Superman's plot and Clark Kent's role.

Heading into the holiday weekend, DC Studios Co-CEO James Gunn offered two big updates concerning the upcoming Superman: Legacy. First up, Gunn confirmed earlier reporting that shooting would be starting in March 2024 – with the film still on track for its Summer 2025 release. Along with that, Gunn also clarified that the logline accompanying the production post didn't come from him and wasn't exactly accurate (more on that in a minute). Now that we've made it through the weekend, Gunn's made two more interesting points on his Threads account.

First up, if you're expecting there to be a big reveal showing off David Corenswet's Superman costume prior to the start of filming in March, Gunn is making it clear that there's a "zero-point-zero" chance of that not happening. As for what members of the "Super-Family" we could expect to see in "Legacy" or somewhere else in the DCU, noted cat lover Gunn was asked if Streaky the Supercat (created by Jerry Siegel & Jim Mooney and debuting in 1960's Action Comics #261) would be appearing in his & DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran's new DCU. After making an observation about how he would be the only human left alive if his cat had superpowers, Gunn broke the news: "Not in the near future, no."

"Not sure where this logline came from. I didn't write it. It has elements of truth (obviously based on things I've said in the past). But I wouldn't describe the plot this way, & I wouldn't call Clark a cub reporter. He's a thirty-year-old full-on reporter," Gunn penned in his social media response from last week, offering an even clearer picture of Clark's age and career level at the point when we meet him. As for when filming is expected to begin, Gunn added, "But, yeah, we shoot in March. I'm grateful every day our production team worked their asses off to keep things going through the strikes. Forces impelled us to stop many times – & if we had, we'd never make July 2025."

Set for a July 11, 2025, premiere, DC Studios' Superman: Legacy stars (so far) David Corenswet (Hollywood) as Superman/Clark Kent and Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) as Lois Lane. In addition, the cast includes Nicholas Hoult (The Great) as Lex Luthor,  Isabela Merced (Sicario: Day of the Soldado) as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi (X-Men: First Class) as Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillion (The Rookie) as Green Lantern Guy Gardner, and Anthony Carrigan (Barry) as Metamorpho. Now, here's a look back at the screencap we shared prior to Gunn's confirmation that listed March 2024 as being the start of filming:
