Superman: Legacy: No Viola Davis/Waller Return; Effects Confusion
James Gunn shut down a rumor about Viola Davis' Amanda Waller returning in Superman: Legacy and cleared up confusion about the film's effects.
Another day, another set of updates to pass along regarding Superman: Legacy as well as the rest of the upcoming DCU – and once again, we have DC Studios co-CEO & "Legacy" writer/director James Gunn to thank for them. So let's dive right into the first, which also gives us a chance to touch base with another series that we're excited about – the Viola Davis-starring Waller. When you have a character like Amanda Waller in your DCU, you know that she's going to end up showing up in a lot of places – but Gunn made it clear that "Legacy" won't be one of them:
Meanwhile… we also learned the very important difference between "Legacy" Effects and Legacy Effects – and how confusing that can be. When asked if the "Legacy" effects would be practical effects mixed with VFX or all VFX, Gunn initially answered that it would be practical – which confused a lot of folks. But what Gunn read was a reference to Legacy Effects – the famed special effects company. So you see the confusion, right? But just so that's no longer the case, Gunn clarified that "Legacy" will have a mix of both practical effects & VFX.
Superman: Legacy: Gunn Confirms March 2024 Start; No Fan of Logline
"Not sure where this logline came from. I didn't write it. It has elements of truth (obviously based on things I've said in the past). But I wouldn't describe the plot this way, & I wouldn't call Clark a cub reporter. He's a thirty-year-old full-on reporter," Gunn penned in his social media response from last month, offering an even clearer picture of Clark's age and career level at the point when we meet him while also disavowing the logline included in a number of production lists. As for when filming is expected to begin, Gunn added, "But, yeah, we shoot in March. I'm grateful every day our production team worked their asses off to keep things going through the strikes. Forces impelled us to stop many times – & if we had, we'd never make July 2025."
Set for a July 11, 2025, premiere, DC Studios' Superman: Legacy stars (so far) David Corenswet (Hollywood) as Superman/Clark Kent and Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) as Lois Lane. In addition, the cast includes Nicholas Hoult (The Great) as Lex Luthor, Isabela Merced (Sicario: Day of the Soldado) as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi (X-Men: First Class) as Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillion (The Rookie) as Green Lantern Guy Gardner, and Anthony Carrigan (Barry) as Metamorpho. Serving as a "continuation" of Max's John Cena-starring Peacemaker (with Gunn currently writing Season 2), Waller is being executive produced & penned by Jeremy Carver (Doom Patrol) and Christal Henry (HBO's Watchmen).
