SYFY Bringing Space Opera 'Vagrant Queen' to Life in 2020
Deadline announced earlier that SYFY is bringing a live-action adaptation of Magdalene Visaggio's comic book space opera series. Vagrant Queen. The story was originally published by Vault Comics in 2018. The storyline for Vagrant Queen is perfect for live action, and should be a blast to check out!
Former child queen Elida was driven from her throne at age ten and forced to wander the galaxy, evading the revolutionary forces that wanted her dead. When an old frenemy claims to know the whereabouts of Elida's long-lost mother, she is forced to return to her former kingdom and stage a rescue.
The live action adaptation will be overseen entirely by women, from writing to directing. Jem Garrard will be running the operation, both as creator and show runner. Gerrard has plenty of experience with the genre, with episodes of Android Employed and Mech X-4 already in her resume.
Vagrant Queen will be produced by Blue Ice Pictures of Toronto, Canada.
Casting is already underway, with Adriyan Rae set to play Elida, the titular Vagrant Queen. Joining her on her adventures will be Tim Rozon as Elida's old friend, Isaac, and Paul du Toit as the Commander Lazaro, a dangerous figure from Elida's past.
The show is being described as a "fun, violent, snarky, space opera," with the producers offering the following synopsis:
"Vagrant Queen follows Elida from child queen to orphaned outcast, as she scavenges the treacherous corners of the galaxy, always one step ahead of the Republic government out to extinguish her bloodline. When her old friend Isaac shows up claiming her mother Xevelyn is still alive, they head off with their new ally, Amae, to stage a rescue that will take her back into the perilous heart of her former kingdom and up against a deadly foe from her childhood, Commander Lazaro."
Shooting for Vagrant Queen is scheduled to begin in July in Capetown, South Africa, with the series set to debut in 2020 on SYFY, which has ordered a 10 episode first season.
