'Logan' Is The Devastatingly Brutal Wolverine Film We've Been Clawing For

logan-international-posterLogan is a bloody good time and gives fans and audiences alike the Wolverine movie we've been craving since 1999.

This review will be spoiler free.

Director: James Mangold
Summary: In the near future, a weary Logan cares for an ailing Professor X in a hide-out on the Mexican border. But Logan's attempts to hide his legacy from the world are up-ended when a young mutant arrives, being pursued by dark forces.

Since 1999, we have been watching Fox take one of the most R-rated weapons in existence, Wolverine's claws, and put them in a PG-13 movie to almost laughable results. There have been times when the rest of the movie has been good enough that the dissonance doesn't matter, but the lack of violence often stands out. In this installment, star Hugh Jackman and director James Mangold have decided to go all out and give us the R-rated Wolverine movie that has been lurking in the shadows for over a decade. Logan does not hold back, as we see a brutal fight within the first ten minutes, where limbs are being cut off and claws are going through people's skulls. They are rough battles to watch as Logan cuts his way through bad guy after bad guy.

The trailers have done a great job of not elaborating on the story too much, so we won't get into it here much either. What they do tell us is that Professor X (Patrick Stewart) is not in good place, Logan himself isn't healing the way he used to — and is self medicating — and a little girl with familiar-looking claws named Laura (Dafne Keen) has turned up. Laura is amazing. Keen is new to the acting scene and she tackles this role like someone twice her age. The movie improves every second that she is on screen. Her interactions with the entire cast are what make the movie great. This girl is a movie star in the making and audiences are going to fall in love, not only with her, but with the character Laura.

There are going to be a lot of people asking whether or not they can take their kids to this movie, in the same way that parents asked about Deadpool. While no one can tell you what to do with your kids, this is a very violent movie. The story follows a child who was horrifically abused and mangled while being held against her will. This is not the fun superhero movie that one takes their kids to see. There is blood, piles of dead bodies, severed limbs, and lots of metal claws going into lots of soft body parts. While the violence isn't Tarantino level 'over the top', it's enough that it earns the R rating it was given (along with liberal use of the "F" word). This is not a movie for kids.

Logan is the top tier X-Men movie we've been sorely lacking since the fantastically underrated X-Men: First Class. The characters are in the hands of people who understand and respect them, and between Logan and Legion it's great to see the X-Men get the high quality content they deserve.
