The Story Behind The Story of The Doctor Who Magazine Puffer Fish Acrostic…
Last week, Bleeding Cool reported that the most recent Doctor Who Magazine contained a column A History Of Doctor Who In 100 Objects: The Pufferfish, credited to The Watcher, actually Dalek-operator Nicolas Pegg, in which anyone who took the first letter of each sentence could spell out the phrase "PANINI AND BBC WORLDWIDE ARE CUNTS".
Panini is the publisher of Doctor Who Magazine in the UK, inherited from the Marvel UK licence which they purchased decades ago.
This week's Private Eye reports that BBC Worldwide had been angered by Doctor Who Magazine's seeming editorial independence to criticise much of the Doctor Who spinoffs and merchandise they produce, indeed, to directly criticise BBC Worldwide decisions to the Doctor Who fanbase.
In an act of revenge, BBC Worldwide has targeted any anti-Brexit and anti-Trump comments made in the magazine. interpreting them as being politically biased and against BBC guidelines. As a result it has instigated a full inquiry and demanded writers go on a training course. Something Panini has had to go along with or lose the license. Cuts have also been demanded to the magazines, which is why the column in question, A History of Doctor Who In 100 Objects was cancelled with this final instalment, no 87, the Puffer Fish.
Hence the acrostic of choice.
