The Ending of Today's Doctor Strange #382 Brings Back Someone Very Unexpected [SPOILERS]
Today's Doctor Strange #382 by Donny Cates, Gabriel Hernandez Walta, and Jordie Bellaire concludes with the good Doctor taking a trip… somewhere. A confrontation with Loki has left him hurt, left him without his best friend and willing to do whatever it takes to strike out against Loki — the god to whom Strange forfeited his powers, his position, his house, and his life.
And finding a man in the snow — if that really is snow. If that really is a man.
Something of the astral plane variety, perhaps. And who is this fellow? Well… the next issue tease tells all.
That's right, folks, the return of The Sentry. And going up against the city that he once destroyed.
The character was created by Paul Jenkins and Jae Lee for the 2000 series The Sentry, which saw the revelation that a Superman-type character had always existed in the Marvel universe but, Miracle Man-style, had been forgotten. Quite deliberately. And then everyone remembered him again. You know, like they're doing with Voyager over in Avengers. Or a bit like what they did with Jessica Jones in Alias. Retcon characters — they're all the rage.
And when Mister Fantastic (remember him?) looking into what it was that people had forgotten, it was down to Doctor Strange.
Who, adding in Spider-Man's secret identity, is quite a dab hand at this kind of thing.
And having to make the world forget The Sentry to deal with his alter-ego, The Void. Now, Sentry did die in the Siege series, after assaulting Asgard and doing this:
And then getting hit very hard.
Very hard.
Making an appeal, initially rejected.
Becoming the evil Void other half to his nature, and getting fried by Thor.
Then having his body dumped in the Sun by Thor, just to be sure.
And having whole comic devoted to his funeral, in which Ben Grimm revealed that he hated Sentry for being a better man than him, and Rogue revealed that she'd got jiggy with him. And Reed Richards got a special, never-revealed message.
And the knowledge that Sentry would somehow return.
Which he did, revived as one of the Four Horseman of the Apocalyptic Seed or somesuch over in Uncanny Avengers.
Back for revenge…
Before finding some altruistic motivation again.
And the Wasp vouching for him.
So that's all right then. Doctor Strange was around then, too. Will it be revealed that Doctor Strange did something back then so that the Wasp's word wasn't all they had to go on? What exactly did he do to "fix" Sentry? Have him spayed?
And what light does this shine on upcoming solicitations?
