The Gifted Season 2: Reed Strucker's Powers Will Be "Very, Very Bad News"

In the first season of The Gifted we found that Reed Strucker was experimented on as a child and given a serum that suppressed his X-gene and any powers he might have. According to actor Stephen Moyer, when speaking to TV Guide, Reed will begin to investigate his powers and that is what causes them to activate. We see some of them in the trailer for the season.

"I look back at my past, and I look at my father's notes, and I basically try to see who I could have been before, and that's how maybe things start to happen," Moyer told TV Guide of Reed's journey to discover his powers. As for what those powers will be, Moyer would only tease, "It's in the family."

Lauren and Andy Strucker have "a combination of telekinesis and molecular manipulation". When they combine their powers it becomes a destructive force, so Reed could have any combination of those powers. Showrunner Matt Nix says that Reed's powers being suppressed for so long combined with his repressed emotions is going to make this a bad experience

"Reed's had powers suppressed for 30-something years," Nix said. "So when they come along, it's a rough ride. It's a very, very rough ride. It's not like he's suddenly a super hero. And one of the things we think about a lot is how are these powers hooked into someone's emotional life, and Reed's a pretty repressed guy. So powers showing up for Reed is not good news. It's very, very bad news."

The X-gene thing has always been linked to coming of age and gaining these things when you're a child or a teenager. When things that you're supposed to go through as a kid, say, the chicken pox, becomes a much bigger deal when it hits you as an adult. Reed is going through something late in life that should have happened decades earlier. Sounds like it's going to be a messy ride.

Summary: In a world where mutated humans are treated with distrust and fear, an institute for mutants battles to achieve peaceful co-existence with humanity.

The Gifted, created by Matt Nix, stars Stephen Moyer, Amy Acker, Natalie Alyn Lind, Percey Hynes White, Sean Teale, Emma Dumont, Jamie Chung, and Blair Redford. It will return on September 25th.
