Everything You Knew About The Black Widow Was Wrong. Again. (Tales Of Suspense #103 Spoilers)
Natasha Romanova is a Russian secret agent, first appearing as The Black Widow in Tales Of Suspense opposite Iron Man in 1964 at the height of the Cold War. The recruits Hawkeye to her cause, then defecting to the US to become an Avenger.
In the 1970s series Amazing Adventures, she was given the origin as an orphan of the Battle of Stalingrad, becoming a ballerina and later trained as a spy. In 2004, that was updated as raised as a child by the Black Widow Ops programme in the USSR, using the Red Room and given biotechnological and psycho-technological enhancements, with false memories later implanted. She was never a ballerina.
And in today's revived Tales Of Suspense, the series that first introduced her, Matthew Rosenberg and Travel Foreman give her another new twist.
Black Widow gave her life in Secret Empire defending Spider-Man against an attack from the Hydra Captain America.
We saw her funeral and everything.
There is a scene showing her death as one of the scars that Kobik left in the new reality to remind people of what happened.
But in Tales Of Suspense #100, there was the idea that she might still be around.
And Hawkeye and Winter Soldier were tracking her down.
They found her. And confronted her. But discovered the wrong subject of the Red Room…
Bait and switch? Not so much. Natasha was back as well.
Sorry, sorry, wrong folder.
And between issues, Infinity Countdown #1.
But how did she survive? Well, in today's Tales Of Suspense #103 it transpires that this may not be really Natasha but a Red Room-grown clone planted with memories.
And the idea that this is not the first time this has happened.
How many Black Widows, how many Natasha Romanoffs have there been? Is this life or is it Memorex?
Also… how many more of her are out there?
TALES OF SUSPENSE #103
(W) Matthew Rosenberg (A) Travel Foreman (CA) Yasmine Putri
The whole world was watching when Black Widow died. Hawkeye was there when her body was buried. There's no chance in the world that Natasha Romanoff survived.
