Canelo Vs Khan Fight Gets Graphic Before Anyone Even Steps Into The Ring
My name is Scott Cohn, and I work in comics, storyboards, and illustration. It seems more and more, outside sources like the UFC and ESPN are turning to comic artists to help promote their businesses because they know what we all already know. It's the age of the superhero, and now everyone else is finally living in it. Where was this age when I was growing up btw?
This time around, HBO contacted me about creating art to help promote their May 7th PPV fight between superstar boxing Middleweight champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez, and former Olympian Amir Khan, while adding a bit of a larger-than-life feel, and the job rocked. But since this was Producer for HBO Digital and Social Media Frank Della Femina's idea, let's pick his brain as to why now.
Scott Cohn: Are you a comic fan to begin with?
Frank Della Femina: I am. I've gone through my phases of Wolverine, Punisher, Captain America and of course more recently The Walking Dead. I'm not a huge collector, but I have a bunch of friends who also collect so I can rely on them for the latest issues.
SC: What made you think of using comic art to promote the fight?
FDF: Combining boxing and comics just seemed like a natural fit. I was reading an issue of the Punisher on my way into work a few weeks ago and came across an image of a guy getting punched in the face. It clicked right there on the spot and I thought, 'Huh, this would be cool.' Let's do it.
SC: Why Instagram as your platform, and how effective it is in marketing/promotion?
FDF: Instagram puts emphasis on the photo entirely. Sure, we support it with a caption and light description, but for the most part the image is the story. Seeing as how we wanted the image to tell the story, Instagram was the a logical platform for that. Boxing fans are loyal to their fighters and vocal when it comes to projecting the outcome of a fight. They won't hold back and I love that. We wanted to give them something different leading up to this fight.
