More Classic Reprints: Betty And Veronica Comics Annual #252
Dan Parent does it again with another new classic Archie fairy tale story. This time it features Betty and Veronica in "Thumbelonica"!
When Betty finds a miniature Veronica in her garden, Betty is initially elated. Unfortunately Veronica is well, herself, in any version (save for Riverdale) and Betty can't stand her. The story is cute and quick and was fun to read. Dan is great at adapting these stories into the classic Archie universe, but I feel like they could be longer. Since he's the only one creating new classic content, why not let the stories be longer for readers?
I do enjoy reading the stories that focus on Mr. Lodge and Veronica though. They have a classic father/daughter relationship that reminds me heavily of my dad and I. Even down to the arguments they have. I also appreciated the golden age gag strip " Betty in Operation Feast", Betty decides to cook a big meal for Archie to win his heart over.
Of course Archie at the end states he'd love to marry Veronica and have Betty as his cook, which is a blow to poor Betty. It's this second hand treatment that Archie has done to her over the years that really makes me wonder why she bothers. I know that Archie has in the past dated Betty (and in one alternate universe marries her…) but it's been clear to me for some time now that he prefers Veronica. I also wish we knew which artist drew this one page story. It looks like Bob Montana but I'm not 100% sure.
Digests are great. I enjoy reading them for the nostalgia feeling, but the truth is any of us classic fans have read these stories a thousand times before. But other than that this is a nice trip down memory lane. I would like to implore Archie's editorial staff to maybe include a few new classic stories in there. Even if it's just 3 more new stories from Dan Parent, classic fans want more. The Sabrina stories were a nice touch to this months digest, but we've all read them before in the Sabrina manga line. The Little Archie stories were also fun to read, especially since a new Little Archie series is coming out. But again, please higher ups at Archie, give us new classic stories.
