Gravitate To Southern Cross #1 By Becky Cloonan And Andy Belanger
It was impossible not to gravitate towards Southern Cross. The cover alone resonated a magnetic feel that I couldn't resist. From Image Comics, written by Becky Cloonan, with art by Andy Belanger, Southern Cross #1 transported me to an innovative sci-fi world the moment I held it in my hands. The story follows Alex Braith who is boarding a flight to Titan in search of answers about her sister's death. Throughout the first issue we are introduced to Tanker Flight 73, and all it has to offer. Andy Belanger expertly designs the appearance of the ship, and all of the intricate levels. There is one scene in particular where Alex is being shown to her cabin, and we watch her journey through all of the levels from top to bottom. I thought that was a clever way of showing the complexity of the ship.
While reading the issue, I felt immersed in Cloonan's script as well. We are lead through the plot with a passionate inner-dialogue from the main character, which allows us to connect with her on a deeper level. Knowing what Alex is thinking as she interacts with strangers, crewmembers, etc. is interesting because sometimes it's much different from the hard exterior she uses to communicate. I admire her determination to stay on course with her goals and not let the distractions of others around her prevent her from doing what she needs to do. The reason she's going on this journey is very serious, and the feelings she has towards herself are equally as troublesome. It's clear that she's had a complicated past, and I hope that we get to learn more about that in future issues. All in all, I think the first issue is set up well, and the ground work has definitely been laid for an excellent second issue. If you're looking for a new sci-fi series with an intriguing main character, pick up Southern Cross #1!
