James Bond #3, The Transition From Fleming To Ellis

JamesBond03-Cov-A-ReardonIn the third installment of Dynamite's James Bond series we see the shift from a loving homage to Ian Fleming's classic novels to a Warren Ellis comic.

Bond heads off with the mis-information he was given last issue and walks into what he sees almost immediately is a trap. The second since he arrived in Germany. This is a hard issue to critique because a big chunk of it is Bond versus Al-Zein in a shootout. What happens around that moves the story forward some as Mr. Masters is sent out to deal with Bond. We learn that there is a relationship between the two henchmen Dharma and Masters and that their enhancements makes that relationship difficult to pursue physically. But the violence momentarily helps Masters… this is a very Ellis-style plot point and leads the shift of sensibilities.

What happens in this issue causes the bad guys to move into condition Vargr… what that is and how it ties into wolves and Norse mythology is still unknown.

The story is fast paced with lots of action and we get a sense that there is a lot more going on than we are first led to believe. But again, the overall story is moving slowly which makes me believe this may be better read in a trade than individually.

Jason Masters art continues to shine here, showcasing the important points without being too flashy. It feels like an old Sean Connery Bond film and that works well for what they are doing here.

James Bond continues to be a good story and has me wanting to come back for more… but the story needs to start getting somewhere soon or that might change.
