Rafer Roberts Walks Us Through His A&A #1 Cover
Artist Rafer Roberts took to his tumblr page to share his process for doing his recently announced A&A: The Adventures of Archer & Armstrong #1 cover that features Obadiah Archer, Aram Anni-Padda and Davey the Mackerel.
Since my variant cover of A&A #1 was revealed here (and is in the current issue of Previews) I thought some folks might like to see some process shots.
1- The original sketch. There was a few others, but this is what we chose. (To this day, I am shocked that my editors let me get away with this level of quick drawing for step one.)
2- The pencils. There was a lot more erasing going on than I usually do on a drawing. I tend to hold myself to a higher standard with covers and want them to be perfect.
3- One of many pictures I took of myself for reference. This is me being Davey the Mackerel.
4 and 5 – Raw inks and cleaned-up in Photoshop inks. I ended up drawing a lot of extra stuff outside of the margin to give my self the freedom to adjust the cropping later on if I wanted to.
6- The final colors.
I hope this is interesting to anyone, and I hope that you tell your local retailer to order you a copy of A&A #1. On sale March 16th, 2016!
