Patrick Ireland writes,

If you were born in the 1980's you likely grew up watching cartoons like He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, Thundercats and Dungeons and Dragons to name a few. These cartoons were full of fantasy adventure, magical beings, and good versus evil. It is these themes and cartoons that have inspired the new comic series A Song of Heroes which is currently running a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter until July 18th.

My name is Patrick Ireland and I am the creator of A Song of Heroes. Like many kids I would create my own stories and characters based on the cartoons I was watching at the time. Little did I know but years later I would still be doing that, alongside others, on fan sites like He-man.org. During the time that we were doing this these properties were dormant and creating fan characters was a way to keep them alive and fresh. Of course we all secretly dreamed that one day Mattel or Hasbro would see our designs and snatch them up making them official characters in their properties.

Eventually Mattel did just that, running a contest where we could send in our fan character entries with the winning entry becoming an actual action figure in the current Masters of the Universe Classics line. I was so excited, that is until I read the fine print which disallowed any character previously posted on the internet for legal reasons. I went ahead and thought up a few new characters and entered them but I knew they were nothing compared to the characters I had spent years cultivating. It was in that moment that I decided I wanted to write my own comic. I realized I had designed over 100 characters and had even won some character design contests over the years. Why not I thought? And thus A Song of Heroes was born taking all those characters I had created and spinning them off into their own universe. Our Red Wizard character has become the main evil force on the planet of Emphyria. With his minions Spy-fly and Thug-bug he searches out dark relics and will undergo a huge transformation. Meanwhile the character Skaldor has become our main hero rising up just in time to balance the forces on the planet.

Creating this comic with Jazyl Homavazir (lines) and Santosh Pillewar (colors) has been a dream come true. We hope you will help support us via our kickstarter so that we can bring you these throwback stories for years to come.

We have a few early bird rewards for Bleeding ool members to snatch up…
