GameStop Expects Nintendo Switch Consoles To Be In High Demand Through All Of 2017

If you are one of the many gamers who hasn't been able to get their hands on a Nintendo Switch, you aren't the only one. During their Q4 earnings call, game retailer GameStop expects the console to be short on hand throughout the year due to the consistently high demand for them.

GameStop COO Tony Bartel said "the demand is incredibly strong" for Nintendo Switch, noting that "as soon as we get it into our stores it's out within hours." As such, Bartel said they "anticipate that we're going to be chasing supply this entire year." He then went on to talk about the console's launch titles, with a focus on the high sales of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, detailing "we almost have a 1:1 attach with Zelda."

Bartel then reiterated the high demand for Switch consoles and how quickly they've been flying off shelves, "there's tremendous demand for this and we just don't know how high it is because every time we get it out in our stores it's literally gone."

Which is fantastic news for Nintendo and fans of Nintendo's proprietary game franchises like Zelda, Pokémon, or any of the numerous Mario games and spinoffs. The Switch was going to be the last attempt for Nintendo at a console after the failure of the Wii U to compete with the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, but given the Switch's success, it is likely not going to be Nintendo's last hurrah.

The Switch sold 1.5 million units in its first week. To address the high demand, Nintendo will reportedly double console production over fiscal year 2017. Some users have found sync issues with their Joy-Cons, which have been fixed. And there are a few rumors floating around about possible upgrades and hacks.
