Good Tidings Of The Geek Revolution – Happenings In Geek Culture Around The Country
By Shawn Perry
Good Evening Bleeding Cool!
"They've got the guns but we've got the numbers!"
To quote the Lizard King's immortal refrain to once again explore the contemporary struggle against the marginalization of people with insatiable passions I now bring now bring you tidings of good cheer!
If you haven't noticed the geeks of the world are taking over and it is for the good of us. Despite all the negativity that is polarized in the form of news media and lame facebook statuses the truth lives on because we live in a constantly- optimizing society filled with enterprising super-geeks like Aaron Haaland, David Zoltan and Chris Proulx.
Bazinga! As reported earlier this week, CBS has finally decided to get in on the comic adaptation game with a series starring a 24-year old Supergirl soaring out into the limelight after years of hiding her powers in the shadow of her more-famous cousin. This is a great sign for geek-kind as the network behind The Big Bang Theory could become a great platform for future adaptations of the four-color medium. Plus after all these years of capitalizing on nerd culture with America's most-watched comedy it seems only natural that they pursue the scene further with a comic book adaptation.
Summer may be cooling down but the convention season is heating up once again as NYCC is just over two weeks ago while this past weekend the Granite State Comic-Con drew an estimated 7,000 fans to the Radisson in Manchester, New Hampshire. Event Organizer Chris Proulx and his three partners have grown the event over the years to a two-day convention that includes great panels, gaming events, guest artists and celebrity appearances, as he explains:
As the geek culture becomes the mainstream, this event has just morphed and gotten bigger, kind of like a pop culture explosion in one place: it's comics, its cartoons, its movies, it's video games. It's all of that morphed together.
In addition to drawing a sizeable collection of Game of Thrones cast members the event gathered some of the best cosplayers in the northeast for their annual contest, including seasoned veteran Joseph B.B Quinn who was impressed by the scale of the event:
It was a decent con. The crowd got pretty large at times so it was hard to move in the hallways, especially in a bulky costume. But hey, it's a good thing as it means the con is growing. The vendors were varied and there was lots to see, the costume contest was huge, and people were friendly.
Meanwhile, in the Midwest the tribal revolution of the geeks continues as the Geek Bar continues to prepare for its grand opening in Chicago with a "Bite of the Living Dead" tasting event later this month. This coming hot-off-the-heels of their recent "Guardians of the Gastronomy" event earlier this month. The Geek Bar has even more exciting preview events lined up for next month as they prepare for their much-anticipated grand opening.
Not to be outdone, our own Aaron Haaland and everyone down at the Geek Easy in Florida were rocking out last week with an epic round of nerd-themed karaoke fueled by Surge and their always-impressive tap list. If you were in the area, I hope you attended Monday night's congregation to watch the Wayne family attend the theater for their Gotham Premiere Party.
That's it for this week, but I will be back soon with an update on the geek revolution.
Peace out Bleeders!
