Richard Parker, Wentworth Miller And Exhibit A To Scare Me, You And Everyone Else In The Theatre
Angry Robot Books have making waves for a few years now as a genre fiction imprint that manages to balance the sheer exuberance of really great science fiction, fantasy and horror with spotlighting some major new voices that challenge and redefine the field. They do genre fiction right, and they're about to launch Exhibit A, a new crime imprint. The first release, Scare Me, by Richard Parker has a wonderfully nasty premise. Here's how they describe it;
Scare Me tells the story of a wealthy businessman who receives a phone call in the middle of the night asking him, 'When did you last google yourself?' He discovers a website with photos of the inside of his own home, along with six other houses he's never seen before, inside one of which a gruesome murder has already taken place.
I finished Scare Me a couple of days ago and it's fantastic, constantly setting up some familiar looking elements of this sort of story and then doing something completely unexpected with them. There's all sorts of beats in there, from staggeringly bloody, occasional violence to a serious, well-handled look at bereavement and strained familial relationships. It was always going to make an interesting movie, but it's landed with someone who has the potential to make it a brilliant one.
Wentworth Miller, round these parts for both Stoker and, wearing a different hat, his series lead role in the utterly loopy Prison Break, has been hired to adapt it for the screen by Relativity. It's a brilliant choice, Miller's laser-like focus on the darkest vagaries of familial life is a perfect fit for Parker's nightmarish race through dark places and I'm really excited to see how this ends up. More as we get it, but, in the meantime, you can pick Scare Me up from 30th April. And I really would, it's great.
