Richard Corben Returns To Heavy Metal Magazine

Almost 20 years after his last appearance in Heavy Metal Magazine, Richard Corben is returning in the next issue with an all-new 15-part story — Murky World, which will last 'til 2020.

Corben was the first American to have a story featured in Heavy Metal when it launched in April 1977 and his return helps round out the company's 40th Anniversary with other past creators, like Tanino Liberatore, who returned with new stories after many years away.

Corben tells Bleeding Cool:

"I'm more than happy to be doing a comic series for Heavy Metal Magazine again. Of top importance to me is that there is far less restriction on the story and art's content. There was also the element of speed. When I was doing regular comics there was always a rush to finish 24 pages of story, art and color, as well as the covers, for an impossible deadline. This high speed production obviously had a detrimental effect on my art. At Heavy Metal there is much more time to complete everything to my satisfaction. This is a dream situation for me."

Meanwhile, EIC Grant Morrison is keen on his return:

"I first discovered Corben's work in the black & white pages of Warren comics horror anthologies CREEPY and EERIE, and it was his astonishing, inimitable style which brought me to Heavy Metal in the days of DEN and NEVERWHERE. It's with great pleasure, then, that we welcome him home."

TMNT co-creator and publisher of Heavy Metal, Kevin Eastman, also in the issue, says:

"Richard was one of the original creative foundations that made Heavy Metal Magazine the groundbreaking destination for just about every creator and fan on the planet… Corben's return to our pages is beyond epic, I am both personally and professionally thrilled!"

CEO Jeff Krelitz says:

"Richard Corben's work has been an inspiration and had a powerful influence on me to me as far back as I can rememeber and beyond excited that I'm here to welcome him home."

And Bleeding Cool? Well, we have the first three pages — break open the Corben!
