Writer's Commentary – Jim Zub On Pathfinder: City Of Secrets #2
Pathfinder City of Secrets #2 Writers Commentary by Jim Zub.
PAGE 1: Picking up right where we left off last issue. Kyra and Merisiel on their own fighting thieves. Hmmm… seems similar to the problems they had in the Pathfinder special. I wonder if it's related?
PAGE 2: Last issue was pretty quiet on the action front but we don't waste any time here. Mersiel's tense and not willing to wait.
PAGE 3: I like the way Leandro helps show the differences in how Kyra and Merisiel fight. Their posing, their stances, all of it reflects their personality well.
PAGE 4: Showing the confidence and poise that Kyra has thanks to her unwavering faith is something I quite enjoy writing. She's not a sermon-speaking priestess, she's a crusader for her faith well armed and ready for battle if the need arises.
PAGE 5: Yuppers, that night on the town story ties in to the pair's current troubles. Normally The Gallowed thieves guild only has human members, so something weird is going on…
PAGE 6-7: I knew that delivering this section would be tough. Merisiel cares a lot for Kyra (and the feeling is mutual) but they come from very different backgrounds. Our Forsaken elf doesn't feel right in the intense light of Kyra's faith. Their relationship is on shaky ground.
PAGE 8-9: Getting the gang (well, most of the gang) back together and setting up our main action plot was key here. Juggling 6 main characters can be tough. I want everyone to get involved but not to just be endless scenes of talking heads.
PAGE 10-11: Kasadei describes the strange murders happening in Magnimar. This follows the 'Dawn of the Scarlet Sun' adventure quite closely. Having an adventure centered around followers of Sarenrae being murdered made it an ideal plotline to adapt to the comic page.
PAGE 12: Characters being exactly where they need to be when they're needed is a staple of these kinds of stories so it was kind of fun playing against that trope. Ezren shows up late and gets left out.
PAGE 13-14: Writing silent scenes can be really tough because you're putting so much weight on the artist's shoulders to deliver the focus and emotional content. Leandro proved up to the task though, showing Merisiel silently falling back to her thieving ways but feeling resentful about it.
PAGE 15-16: Having 3 pages of Ezren missing the boat may seem excessive, but it foreshadows his motivation and plays into the frustrations he voiced last issue about not being able to waste any more time. He desperately wants to prove himself worthy of becoming a Pathfinder.
PAGE 17: Setting up the ambush. As most RPG players know, the best laid plans can immediately go awry the minute the action starts. I wanted to make sure the reader knew what was 'supposed' to happen to compare it to how it plays out next issue.
PAGE 18-19: More silent panels and building up of tension.
PAGE 20: Having spell effects like a Silence spell can be tough to show visually, so I wanted to make sure it was really clear.
PAGE 21: Same here. Having Kyra's dialogue fade out as the Silence spell takes effect is all about informing the reader and setting up the big attack.
PAGE 22: And there it is, more trouble for Kyra. She really can't catch a break this issue. I hope you're excited about seeing the battles and struggles to come in City of Secrets #3, arriving in July!
