X-ual Healing: Old Man Logan #43 – My Name is Joy Jones. You Killed My Husband. Prepare to die.

Sworn to sell comics for Marvel executives who feared and hated the fact that Fox owned their movie rights, The Uncanny X-Men suffered great indignities, but with a corporate merger on the way, the X-Men can finally get back to doing what they do best: being objectively the best franchise in comics.

Each week, armed with the joy, heartbreak, and frustration of 30+ years of reading X-Men comics, we crankily read every new X-book that comes out, recap the events, provide some back-links to Marvel Unlimited, and wonder when Marvel will let Chris Claremont write something again. Seriously, how do you have the greatest writer in the history of comics on the payroll and just not use him for anything?

It's the way X-Men comics were meant to be read! It's the column that can only be known as…

X-ual Healing: Old Man Logan #43 – My Name is Joy Jones. You Killed My Husband. Prepare to die.

The issue starts with Sarah Dewey, author of the Kingpin's autobiography and ally of Old Man Logan from a few issue back, being murdered by Bullseye. The next day, Logan is packing up to leave his motel in the Bronx. He considers leaving his briefcase full of healing-factor restoring Regenix behind, being as it's a dangerous drug that will kill him if he uses it too often, but he decides to take it with him, just in case. As he's about to check out, he learns of Dewey's murder on the TV behind the front desk. Sorry, Logan. The original Wolverine hasn't returned yet, so you've got to stick around for a couple more issues.

Logan heads to the crime scene, Dewey's apartment, and looks for clues, finding a piece of the playing card Bullseye threw from across the street through a window to kill Dewey. Logan is interrupted by Joy Jones, who helpfully provides her backstory though X-pository dialogue. She's a former FBI agent whose husband was killed by Bullseye, which happened in Bullseye: The Columbian Connection TPB, a caption box lets us know. Logan may not go by "Wolverine" anymore, but that doesn't mean he's just gonna team up with some Joy Jones. They agree that Jones will use the codename Vendetta, which is a little on the nose. Of course, the solicit calls her Shadow Tracer, so who the hell knows.

My name is Joy Jones. You killed my husband. Prepare to die.

Logan and Vendetta track Bullseye's trail to his contract killing agent and threaten him into providing info on Bullseye. Since Logan beat Bullseye a few issues back, he's been crazier than ever before. He's been killing everyone that's ever crossed him, including some of his own clients. Now it's the agent's turn, as Bullseye kills him with a card as well.

Bullseye motions from across the street for Logan and Vendetta to pick up the phone. They do, and Bullseye taunts Logan, telling Logan it's his fault Sarah Dewey is dead. He also wasn't a fan what she wrote about him in her book. Jeeze, everyone's a critic. Someone get Bullseye a YouTube channel so he has a mildly healthier outlet for his hurt feelings.

Vendetta tries to play chicken with Bullseye, firing her machine gun at him while he tosses a card at her skull, but Logan tackles her before either one can win. Bullseye set a bomb in the office, so Logan and Vendetta have to escape quickly. They run across the street and into the building where Bullseye was attacking from to find he murdered an entire office full of innocent people just to set this trap. And he wrote a message on the wall taunting Logan. We'll have to see how this turns out next issue.

The Bottom Line

Is it too late to cancel Return of Wolverine and just keep Old Man Logan around instead? Please?

The comic references Bullseye: The Columbian Connection, which is actually a trade paperback collection of the 2017 Bullseye series. Luckily, you don't have to track down a copy. Those issues are all available on Marvel Unlimited.
