2D Platformer Aegis Defenders is also Coming to the Nintendo Switch

Tower defense and 2D platformer Aegis Defenders will be released on the Nintendo Switch as well as PC and PS4. And that Switch port won't be delayed much from the initial release. In fact, Aegis Defenders will release on February 8, 2018 on the Switch, PS4, and PC.

Aegis Defenders gives players control a team of Ruinhunters, who embark on a quest to save their village by finding a powerful weapon known as Aegis. The game is split into 2D exploration, tower building, and defense phases. The exploration phases happen in open areas players can navigate either solo or with friends. But don't feel like it's too much about the mechanics, Aegis Defenders puts a heavy emphasis on the game's narrative and characters.

"Making a game for a Nintendo platform has always been a big dream of mine," Bryce Kho, director of Aegis Defenders GUTS Department told IGN. "From a developer's perspective, it's great to be on a new platform where there's still an appetite for innovative games rather than only blockbusters."

On the Switch, Aegis Defenders will feature split Joy-Con local multiplayer, allowing players to use a single Joy-Con as part of the drop-in at anytime cooperative play. "The ability to just slide off one Joy-Con and play co-op anywhere takes it to another level," Kho said.

Aegis Defenders first appeared as a Kickstarter project back in 2014. Thanks to backer feedback, the game has already seen tweaks to its mechanics and story focus.

"One piece of fan feedback that ended up impacting the game a lot, was just how some fans were so curious about the game's characters," Kho said. "Taking a cue from the Persona series, we tried to address both groups by adding small branching dialogues within each conversation.  It didn't make the conversations that much longer but it gave the player more opportunities to get to know the characters or at least have fun picking stupid responses."

Changes also incorporated a new Fusion System, which tasks players with combining items with other characters in the game, motivating players to more regularly swap between characters or encourage better co-op.
