PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds is Not Esports Ready, Says Director
Brendan "PlayerUnknown" Greene has admitted that PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds is not quite ready to premiere in the esports realm.
While the game has held tournaments this year, the director of the game has told PCGamesN that he doesn't think it's ready for serious pro-play. In an interview, he said quite plainly:
"We are nowhere near esports ready yet."
That doesn't mean the game is being given up in that scene, though. He added that PUBG Corp. is hoping it "can get the game to a state where we can work with organisations to start building a battle royale scene."
Having watched a fair bit of the professional PUBG games, it really is a pretty unique eSport. While the cream usually rises to the top, the sheer randomness and numbers means that anything can happen and any one player can beat another in the right circumstance. It's chaos and messy and lacks the strictness of usual games played professionally, but that is its charm. I hope that in 2018, it can be looked at a little though to really get it where it needs to be. Even as the game has just hit 1.0, and it is a significant improvement, the game will benefit from constant work. Here's hoping.
