Even Final Fantasy XIV Director Naoki Yoshida is on the Battle Royale Train
We get it. Battle royale games are big right now, and the evergrowing behemoth that is Fortnite seems like it won't ever stop, but having Final Fantasy XIV Producer and Director Naoki Yoshida talk about making a battle royale game is going a bit too far.
In an interview with GameSpot, Yoshida enthused that one of his dream projects would be a battle royale title:
Yoshida also said he'd like to make another MMO someday that may not be set in the Final Fantasy universe. He'd like to make that game before he dies. And while on the subject of dream projects, Yoshida said he hopes to be able to work on Diablo 4 someday.
"I would like to make a battle royale game. I have some ideas to do that," Yoshida told GameSpot through a translator. "I have some ideas to make that type of game fun. As an online game designer, I would like to make an MMORPG from scratch without any limitations or restrictions. Removing all those kind of restrictions, I would like to make one MMORPG that fits the current trend before I die. I would also like [to work on] Diablo 4."
Now, this could mean a lot of things. First off, it probably means nothing as Yoshida is firmly hitched to the FFXIV wagon for the foreseeable future, but it could also mean better PvP content for FFXIV. After all, battle royale games are nothing more than a specific type of PvP. And player-vs-player content is one of the areas in which FFXIV is pretty sorely lacking.
Sure, it has PvP, but it's hard to join and hard to figure out. PvP in FFXIV is ultimately unsatisfying for most players and there are many who avoid it all-together.
So while the thought of a Final Fantasy battle royale, or a non-FF battle royale developed by Yoshida are great concepts, we'd prefer to be realistic and just get a better version of what we have already.
