Finding Another New Home: Our Quick Review For 'The Legend Of Heroes: Trails Of Cold Steel' On PC

It's always weird trying to review a game that's already out. The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel has already been released for almost four years, being out in Japan since 2013, and here in North America and Europe since December 2015 and January 2016 respectively. A PS3 title no less, only available on Vita for anyone who wishes to snag the game on a current system. So when you get a new port of a game like this on a different system, it's kinda hard to come up with anything new to say as we look at the game on PC.

So let's get to the nitty-gritty: This is the same version of the game you played on the Vita. The storyline is the game, the characters are the same, the dialog hasn't changed, the fighting sequences and RPG elements remain intact—the only real difference is you're playing this on a controller on your PC. Oh, sure, you could play it with a keyboard if you really want to, but considering the way things are laid out, its rather pointless to do keystrokes. Don't be that weird person, it's clear this is a console game, just plug in a controller and play it normally.

The graphics to the game feel like they've gotten a slight upgrade. One of the issues I remember having with the Vita was that it felt like a weirdly composited PS3 game, and now it looks like some of that has been smoothed over. Whether that's to be blamed on the Vita or it's simply because I'm now playing the game on a tower which has a much more powerful system, that's a coin toss for someone with much more technical know-how to decide. But I do not believe Peter "Durante" Thoman (who handled the port) went to any extra length to polish the game for PC, so I'm guessing this post of the game just runs better on a PC because the Vita version wasn't that great.

I'm going to give The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel the same score as I once did at a previous publication I worked for, simply because it's the same game I played already. They didn't take anything away or water it down, so nothing was taken away to make the rating go lower. But they also didn't add anything to the port or change anything up to make the PC versions special, so nothing was improved upon to make it go up. (Beyond a Turbo mode and 5,000 new voice lines.) I would recommend playing it if you want to know the story before the sequel comes out on PS4 next month.
