NieR: Automata Will Probably Not Be Coming To Xbox One Anytime Soon
NieR: Automata's producer Yosuke Saito told Express UK that currently there were no plans to bring Platinum Games and Square Enix's latest title to the Xbox One. Despite saying that they would be publishing the game on both platforms a few months ago, it seems like development on that side has completely halted – if it ever even started to begin with.
Saito claims the decision was made because "the Japanese market for Xbox One is not strong, so the decision was made to focus on PlayStation 4 rather than to split our efforts across two platforms. The biggest benefit to developing on one platform is that we did not have to split our time, allowing us to focus more on the quality. It is not about whether one platform is better than the other, it's that from a development point of view were can devote more time to one platform."
While all of those points may be true, it's worth noting that the original NieR debuted on the Xbox 360. PlayStation 4 is indeed the platform of choice for Japanese gamers, but Square Enix is not a Japanese-only publisher. Refusing to port the game to Xbox One might hurt profits, even though the PS4 is the best-selling console worldwide.
The NieR: Automata demo is currently available on the PlayStation Store. The full release of the game is slated for February 23rd in Japan, with the worldwide release being set for March 7th. Nothing like last minute changes, huh?
