Plaion announced this week they are working with Retro Games Ltd. to produce one of Atari's computing models, as we're getting The 400 Mini. If you didn't grow up in the late '70s and early '80s, you've probably never heard of this one, let alone seen it, as most people associate the company with The 2600. This and the Atari 800 were part of what they call the 8-Bit Family, serving as one of the predecessors to personal home computing by making the console more than just a gaming unit, and competed with the Commodore 64 for the marketplace who were looking for this kind of unit at the time. It did well at the time, but eventually, support for it was cut in 1992. Now we have the mini version, made at 50% the size of the original, with multiple pre-installed games and a USB-converted system for 4-player action. We have more info about it below, as it will be released on March 28 for $100.

The 400 Mini

Launching with some of the most iconic and important video games of the era pre-installed, The 400 Mini has been created using modern technology to authentically replicate the Atari 400 at 50 percent of the scale of the original home computer. For those looking to relive the gameplay experiences of the 70s and 80s, included with The 400 Mini is the CXSTICK, an enhanced, updated recreation of the iconic CX40 Atari joystick for that added touch of nostalgia. This new controller comes with an additional seven seamlessly integrated function buttons and USB, making it compatible with a wide range of consoles.

  • A half-sized version of the distinctively styled Atari 400, emulating the whole 8-bit Atari range from the 400 to the 800XL, and the Atari 5200 home console.
  • Also included is a recreation of the classic Atari CX40 joystick, with an additional seven seamlessly integrated function buttons.
  • The ability for players to side-load their own games via a USB stick, with support for cartridge, disk and cassette ROMs.
  • Rewind and save games.
  • HD TV output via HDMI, with 50/60Hz compatibility.
  • Five USB ports allow for the addition of a modern keyboard, extra joysticks, and more.
  • Look and feel of 1979: The 400 Mini has been lovingly crafted using modern technology, from the hard-to-match colors of the original machine to the authentic textures of the plastic casing and membrane keyboard; no compromise was made relative to the iconic 1970s look and feel of the original Atari 400.
