Puyo Puyo is Becoming an Esports Game in Japan
Puyo Puyo. Depending on how you feel about the game, it's either one of the best creations Sega ever made to puzzle gaming, or their failed attempt to conquer Tetris after Tetris already conquered the world. The game has a loyal fanbase after nearly 27 years, and it's about to move to the next level in Japan. The Japan eSports Union (JeSU) has just approved Puyo Puyo to be their first game in their league, meaning there will soon be esports tournaments for the game in Japan. The news originally broke from Inside Games and later confirmed by Siliconera that the game met all of the requirements to join and can now issue Pro Gamer licenses to those who wish to compete.
Right now there are two specific licenses you can get in Japan, one for 13-15 year-olds, and one for people 15+, just in case you feel like applying to play. But you might actually want to take interest as Sega announced shortly after that they'll be holding the first tournament called the Poyu Poyu Cup during Sega Fest 2018 taking place between April 14-15, with the grand prize being one-million Yen. (Or about $9,400 USD.) Be on the lookout for signup opportunities in the weeks to come.
