The Reason Why 'Overwatch' Removed Match Ratings
Recently, Overwatch killed off their one-to-three-star match rating system in the latest PTR patch 1.12, which is basically setting up to remove it entirely from the game. Most players didn't really notice or care, but the ones who did really, really cared. So much so that they went to the forums to get answers. The answer they got probably didn't make them feel any better.
Jeff Kaplan, never one to shy away from a topic (except when it comes to Loot Boxes) responded very bluntly with an answer we could have told you ourselves. Simply put: people who lost rated matches poorly while people who won rated them highly. Who woulda thunk! Also, newer players used it more frequently, until they realized how pointless the system is and how it adds nothing to the gameplay value or your score, and then drop off.
The hope was that people would rate matches they enjoyed playing, win or lose, and that data would give Blizzard and the Overwatch team better insight into the game and what to improve and what didn't work so well. While they had high hopes, they didn't count on players leaving matches being triggered and salty, automatically giving the games a single star for a loss and screwing up the data. But to be fair from a player's perspective, no one told us that's what it was for. So maybe it's for the best that it be removed from Overwatch entirely.
