There Was A Second Wind Waker Zelda Game In The Works But Nintendo Cancelled It For Twilight Princess
This should end up being a pretty heated debate between Zelda fans, eh?
Wind Waker is a somewhat controversial title, perhaps less so now than when it first came out, but the departure from look and feel of the series has always been a point of debate for fans. It's certainly well regarded now, but some fans thought it just didn't look Zelda enough when it first came out.
It turns out that might have stopped a sequel for the game ever happening. In an interview within an art book, Satoru Takizawa (translated by Nintendo Everything) explained that work for a follow up to Wind Waker was on the cards, but it never came to be as Nintendo decided to chase Twilight Princess instead. Weirdly, it seems the decision was partially about horses. He said:
To tell you the truth, we had begun the initial steps towards creating Wind Waker 2 around that time. However, demand for a more Ocarina-like game was growing by the day. We did our very best with Wind Waker, and put everything we had into it…
However, Wind Waker 2 would have taken place in a more land-based setting, rather than on the sea, so that we could have Link gallop across the land on a horse. But Link's proportions in Wind Waker weren't very well suited for riding on horseback, he was too short, and an adult version of Toon Link did not seem appropriate either.
He also added:
High-budget live-action fantasy movies were also huge at the time, so with all things considered, we decided to have at it.
Would you rather have a Wind Waker 2 over what Twilight Princess was? That's a question that I'm sure will keep many forum posts alive for years to come.
