Star Control: Origins Taken Down From Purchase Due to Legal Issues
Star Control: Origins has been taken down from Steam, GOG, and other sites due to a legal battle between Stardock and the series creators. The heart of the matter stems from creators Fred Ford and Paul Reiche claiming that Stardock was preventing them from working on their own creation, to which the company's founder Brad Wardell issued a statement of their own saying it was basically a lie and that they were disappointed in their behavior. Since then, it's been a short string of legal posturing between the two parties over who owns the copyright, that has since escalated after a judge denied an injunction from Stardock to block a DMCA takedown notice from Ford and Reiche, which now prevents the sale of the game.
While the game may not be for sale at the moment, Stardock says they will continue to fight the creators in court, which you can't really blame them for since they've sunk a ton of cash and time into the project only to have it halted once the game was released. The creators have issued their own statement on the judgment and how they compared the game to previous incarnations to defend their copyright claim. Either way, this is a really sad chapter in the series as Star Control: Origins did a really awesome job of capturing the past while also innovating the game. Whoever wins the battle will probably have more financial issues on their hands than they realize, so this may be the death of the game in the end.
