Ubisoft Exec Says Publisher Wouldn't Be The Same If Vivendi Took Over

It has seemed for the last few months that Vivendi have been quite aggressively trying to get their mits on Ubisoft. The company is allegedly trying to aquire the publisher in a hostile take over, ending its 30 year independence. It's hard to say what it means, both if it succeeds and if it doesn't, but Ubisoft is going into a pivotal part of its story right now.

One person who isn't excited about the prospect is Ubisoft's vice president of live operations Anne Blondel though. Speaking to PCGamesN, the exec explained that she thinks if Vivendi were to take over the company, it would lose what makes it special. She explained:

The thought I have is that I have been [here], with Ubisoft, for 20 years, and I know what made us so successful for 30 years, is being super independent, being very autonomous.

She later added:

Gamers are still [with us] and I know for a fact, having been there for 20 years, that if you [separate] us from our independence, if you take away the way we like taking risk and inventing new stuff, well it's not going to be the same Ubisoft – for me, it wouldn't be the same.

I would say, in terms of what this would mean for gamers is really unclear. While Ubisoft are independent, they are hardly a small indie developer throwing out small games. They are one of the biggest companies in the business, and there are some who are very critical of their output and practices, so seeing what a take over would do to them is hard to say. This really is quite an interesting story that will be fascinating to see play out.
