Bloodborne's Short Comings Are Informing Dark Souls III Combat

Dark Souls 3I thought the combat in Bloodborne was a huge step up over previous Dark Souls game. The speed of the title's fights were refreshing in new ways, without ever loosing sight of the challenge of other Souls games.

However, it's limitations are what brought back director Hidetaka Miyazaki. Talking to GamesMaster magazine (via GamesRadar+), Miyazaki said that he is returning to Dark Souls, because of the lack of choice the Bloodborne combat offered.

Because of the character of Bloodborne's gameplay, its battle style, as well as the role-playing elements, it's limited compared to the Dark Souls franchise. It doesn't necessarily mean Bloodborne was bad. However, while working on [it] I realised, I want to [create] something which has a wide range of battle styles, or features magic, or those things which allow players to wear awesome armour. Those elements are what actually made me come [back] to the Dark Souls franchise.

I do understand where he is coming from. Despite there being a few weapon choices, you are more or less forced to play one way in Bloodborne. Honestly, I preferred that. It made the game feel tight to a tee. If From Software can deliver that focus across several play styles though, it will be quite something.
