Xbox Head Phil Spencer Isn't A Fan Of The Console Wars
Xbox boss Phil Spencer has never shied away from being nice about his competitors. He has opened his E3 briefings talking about them, and has spoken positively about Sony and Nintendo several times in the past.
That is why it isn't surprising to hear that he isn't a huge fan of Console Wars, nor is he upset that the PlayStation 4 is selling well. In an interview with GameSpot, Spencer explained that he finds the debates counteractive to the industry, and would like to see them subside.
I've said before, the one thing that I probably find a little distasteful in the discourse around games is the divisiveness that people try to build between platforms. It becomes more about what piece of plastic I own than what games I'm playing. It becomes more about somebody else failing than the things I love succeeding. I don't think that's a good place for our industry. I know that's not everybody, and it's easy to find the pockets of that vitriol and kind of think that that is gaming, but I'm not going to embrace that. I'm going to actively push against that. People sometimes will make fun of me that I mentioned Sony or I mentioned Nintendo. It's not to placate anybody or make them think I'm some kind of good guy. My job isn't really to keep you from buying something else.
Now, it's worth noting that this is probably an easier stance to take when you are selling second best. Still, in my estimation, Spencer has been a breath of fresh air for the industry since he took over the Xbox brand. Hopefully these kinds of comments will cool rabid commenters.
