Weird West Previewed On PC Gaming Show

The PC Gaming Show previewed Weird West, an upcoming top-down Western RPG with an interview with the head developer, WolfEye Studios' Raphael Colantonio. Colantonio had previously worked on Prey and Dishonored, and brought his interest in immersive storytelling to the new game. He talked extensively about the game design and mechanics.

Survive and unveil the mysteries of the Weird West through the intertwined destinies of its unusual heroes in an immersive sim from the co-creators of Dishonored and Prey. Discover a dark fantasy reimagining of the Wild West where lawmen and gunslingers share the frontier with fantastical creatures. Journey through the origin stories of a group of atypical heroes, written into legend by the decisions you make in an unforgiving land. Each journey is unique and tailored to the actions taken – a series of high stakes stories where everything counts and the world reacts to the choices you make. Form a posse or venture forth alone into the otherworldly confines of the Weird West and make each legend your own.

Set in a gothic horror version of the Old West with hints of supernatural Lovecraftian dread, the game features five player characters to play through the story. Top-down isometric view RPGs seem to be making a major comeback these days on PC and also console. The RPG design mechanics feature multiple ways a player can choose to solve a problem, including how to deal with enemies. This has always been a mainstay of traditional top-down RPGs. It feels like RPGs are returning to their roots after years of full 3D third-person graphics. Perhaps it's more fun to watch enemies get splattered from a strategically successful move that sets off a sequence of events that can spread across the view as the player's actions come to fruition.

Devolver Digital is publishing the game, and Colantonio promises a playable demo will be released soon.
