You Win Some…You Lose Some: April & May In Pandemic Legacy

Last Friday night I rounded the troops for another game of Pandemic Legacy. We arrived at April, our fourth month, and anxiously wondered what would happen next. Our fifth game began with a sense of impending doom as we realized that we had no funding to assist us. The feeling was soon made worse when the game instructed us to put a reminder marker on the third infection rate. We then knew that something big would be happening if we reached that point.

[WARNING: MAJOR SPOILERS FOR PANDEMIC LEGACY BELOW!]

To make matters worse, we discovered "The Faded," a race affected by the COdA disease, that would now replace COdA cubes and turn those cities into "Faded Cities." Obviously, this was a huge shock to discover such a major change in the game, and to also discover actual figures. Who would have thought that one of the boxes would contain actual zombie-like figures?

Despite having two outbreaks in a row, we contained black early on in the game and managed to eradicate blue and cure red. Our confidence levels soared and we marched into our May game ready for anything.

Here's the thing about confidence…it doesn't mix well with "The Faded."

"They're Jell-O warriors…they're no longer black cubes."

We ended up making a pretty big mistake early on in the game that hindered our progress. It seemed that we would be able to cure blue early on in the game, and instead of containing black we focused on curing blue. This led to our demise unfortunately. Before we knew it, our black cities were out of control and the green figures were everywhere. Sadly, we lost our "Early May" game.

As always, I want to take a moment to comment on how surprising and exciting this game is. Despite our May loss, we learned a lot during that session. Pandemic Legacy continues to be one of the most captivating board game experiences of my life. I feel so invested in the story, and in my character. With that said, after our loss there was a major discussion about character roles. Since some new roles have become available, there's pressure to switch characters to better utilize the different abilities. Everyone is pretty open minded to the idea, except me. I just don't see how I can abandon Christine.

Moving forward we've agreed to make controlling our incurable disease cities a priority before attempting to cure others. We discovered that it's important to have a stable foundation before getting to a "ready to cure" point.

You win some…you lose some. To close, I present you with 21 Seconds of Pandemic Legacy Reactions.
