Article Summary

  • A24 releases special edition Zac Efron figure from The Iron Claw.
  • Figure immortalizes Efron's portrayal of wrestler Kevin Von Erich.
  • Insight into the tragic history of the Von Erich wrestling family.
  • The collectible's quality is questioned but still expected to sell well.

A24 put out one of the best movies of 2023, The Iron Claw, in December. In it, Zac Efron stars as Kevin Von Erich, one member of the famous Von Erich wrestling family that saw tragedy at every turn. It is a gut-wrenching story that many people were unprepared for when they got into the theater. Efron's performance in the film has gotten quite a bit of buzz ever since the trailer debuted, and now it will be immortalized in plastic. A24 will offer an Efron as Kevin Von Erich figures from their online store. It looks to be a fully articulated figure, though I am not quite sure which company produced it. It comes with a removable robe and iron claw hand. It comes packaged on a pretty neat blister card as well. You can see it below.

A24 Could Make All The Brothers And Make Bank

The Von Erich family is an American professional wrestling family. Originally from Texas, their actual surname is Adkisson, but every member who has been in the wrestling business has used the ring name "Von Erich," after the family patriarch, Fritz Von Erich (Jack Adkisson). Jack took on the name as part of his wrestling gimmick, i.e., in-ring persona, as he initially portrayed a villainous (heel in wrestling terminology) German Nazi, hence using a German-sounding name. Their most famous move was The Iron Claw, which protected in the industry for years. When Fritz died of cancer in his Denton County home in 1997 at 68, five of his six sons predeceased him. His firstborn, Jack Jr., was accidentally shocked and drowned in a puddle at the age of 6 in 1959 outside his Niagara Falls home. In 1984, David Von Erich died in a Tokyo hotel from enteritis at the age of 25. Mike, Chris, and Kerry all committed suicide; Mike took an overdose of Placidyl near Lewisville Lake in 1987 at the age of 23, Chris shot himself in the head with a 9mm handgun in 1991 at the age of 21, and Kerry shot himself in the chest in the family yard in 1993 at the age of 33. Kevin Von Erich is the last surviving son.

As someone who collects quite a few figures and wrestling toys in general, this doesn't look like the best figure. The knee joints are very bad, and while pictures usually don't paint some figures in the best light, that looks nothing like Efron. A24 will still sell a ton of these, and it is a great idea. But with a touch more effort, this could have been really special. I will still probably buy this to have a keepsake from the film, but I will click buy while wincing.
