AFI Pick the Top 10 Films of 2019: 'Marriage Story', 'Joker', 'Knives Out' Make the List
AFI, or the American Film Institute if you are not familiar, have released their list of the top 10 films for 2019. This is their list of films that AFI deems "culturally significant". The yearly list is one of many that awards pundits point to for early indicators of what films will be favorites heading into Oscar season. The awards are given to both film and television, with a ceremony taking place January 3rd. South Korean filmmaker Bong Joon Ho is being honored with a special award for his film Parasite, since it is not an American made film. The list is as follows:
Marriage Story
The Farewell
1917
The Irishman
Jojo Rabbit
Joker
Knives Out
Little Women
Richard Jewell
Once Upon a Time in…Hollywood
No real surprises here. Every film they chose is a huge awards contender, and this further bolsters Joker and its case for serious awards contention moving forward. Great to see Knives Out on the list as well, many are hoping that it can sneak onto the awards conversation after great reviews and strong opening weekend box office last week. Also worth noting that Netflix has two films on the AFI list this year- Marriage Story and The Irishman.
