Dark Phoenix Star Alexandra Shipp Thinks It's Time for a Storm Solo Movie

Hollywood is finally starting to wake up and see that female lead superhero movies can move tickets when they are done well. We can hope this kicks off a string of female lead superhero movies and one actress is throwing a name into the ring. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter Alexandra Shipp, who played Storm in X-Men: Apocalypse and will return to the role in Dark Phoenix, says that while no one has talked to her about a Storm movie she thinks it's time.

Not yet, but I am hoping we will get around to it. It is definitely time for these Storm fans to get the movie they have been dying for.

When asked what she would like to see in a Storm solo feature Shipp pointed out that there are so many directions they could do with Storm.

There are so many different storylines that we could take on when it comes to Storm — whether she is losing her powers or going back to Africa. I just want there to be a message of "this woman doesn't need a man." Just one movie where a woman doesn't need a man, really.

Storm is arguably one of the most recognizable female X-Men and it's kind of amazing that we've had seven (nine if count Deadpool/Deadpool 2 but not really relevant to this point) and counting X-Men movies and none of them have done anything interesting with Storm. Maybe Dark Phoenix will give her an actual subplot and someday Fox, or whoever ends up owning the X-Men at the end of the day, will finally give this fantastic character the attention she deserves.

Summary: Jean Grey begins to develop incredible powers that corrupt and turn it into a Dark Phoenix. Now the X-Men will have to decide if the life of a team member is worth more than all the people living in the world.

Dark Phoenix, directed by Simon Kinberg, stars James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Sophie Turner, Jennifer Lawrence, and Nicholas Hoult. It will be released on February 14th, 2019.
