"Deadpool" – Well, Ryan Reynolds Anyway, Just Bought A Cellphone Carrier
In an effort to stop all that money from Deadpool and Detective Pikachu burning a hole in his pocket, Ryan Reynolds has bought an ownership stake in the cellphone carrier company Mint Mobile.
"It's a bit unconventional which is why I like it," said Reynolds. "Celebrities generally invest in high-end products like skincare brands or delicious gin companies. Yet Mint is making wireless way more affordable at a time when the average American is paying 65 dollars a month. I'm excited to champion a more practical approach to the most essential technology."
You may not have heard of Mint Mobile. If you have, you're probably a techie who found out about it on a podcast or something. You might even be one of its customers. Mint is a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO). They sell access to T-Mobile's cellular network at a much-reduced price, as low as $15 a month by having no retail overhead costs like stores.
All Hail The New Cellphone Overlord
"Mint Mobile's consumer-centric approach and maniacal focus on generating consumer value has kicked Mint into hyper-growth mode," Mint's CEO David Glickman said. "It's fitting that the most disruptive wireless company is now owned by the most innovative marketer on the planet."
"While every other tech titan is off chasing rockets, I'll corner the budget-friendly wireless sector. Like most people, I only use rockets 10-12 times a year but I use my mobile service every day," Reynolds said in a statement posted on the Mint website.
Celebrities spend money investing all kinds of businesses all the time. They invest in bars, restaurants, tech startups, you name it. There's also the occasional disastrous con (we didn't forget you, Fyre Festival) and whatever the hell Goop is. Here, a stake in a thriving and well-reviewed cellphone carrier comes off as a much more sensible investment than most.
Reynolds will help with the company's communications and marketing efforts, as well as strategic decision-making. Let's hope he takes part in more video marketing campaigns that go viral because they're goofy fun.
And Mint Mobile gets to go viral with Ryan Reynolds and perhaps get more people to sign up. Just writing this article means that mission is accomplished.
