Fluffy Goes Pop Culture In Latest Special

gabrieliglesiasIt's Christmas night, the house has emptied out, the dishes are done and its that time of night where it's too late to take a nap and too early to go to bed… so you're in that grayzone with no energy and just want the time to move past. That's where I found myself last night. Didn't feel like watching a movie nor a TV show. Just wanted some mindless entertainment to unwind to. Enter Netflix and the man known to the world as Fluffy! Gabriel Iglesais' latest comedy special I'm Sorry For What I Said When I Was Hungry is now available on the streaming service. I like Fluffy, I've watched his other specials and have thought about going to see him live. This seemed like just the thing for my holiday evening.

I wouldn't normally think about reviewing a comedy special for BC. It's not a huge stretch, but it's not our normal area of coverage. But while watching the routine, Iglesais hit on a few pop culture and comic book topics which made the tie in seem more obvious.

The show is in Chicago and Iglesais walks out and is handed the microphone by former Chicago Bear player and current coach of the Carolina Panthers, Ron Rivera. Besides it being Chicago, Rivera is only the second Latino head coach in NFL history and the current Head Coach of the Year. As a Panther fan, I got a kick out of seeing Riverboat Ron there. Once he has the mic, Fluffy acknowledges Rivera and then he points out the infamous Martin Moreno, who is part of many of Gabriel's routines.

From there his routine was a little different than normal. His previous material seemed to focus on him being a regular guy who get into funny situations. He gets laughs telling of his adventures with Martin, some of the jokes they pull and dealing with his girlfriend and her son (who he now calls his son). Any fame he had obtained seemed to be shocking to him or downplayed. The new material was different. He acknowledges his fame and tells story related to it. How his son react to him as compare to his fans who are awed by him. His opportunities to meet famous people. And how fans react to him. He still make these stories very funny, but they feel different.

Some of the things he talks about in the special are Marvel vs DC, whose better and how Batman isn't the greatest hero of all time… he's the creepiest. And he takes a swipe at Green Lantern. He also talks about a deal he has with ABC to create a sitcom about himself and how he has to be on his best behavior because ABC is owned by Disney and they don't mess around. This bit included a pretty spot on Yoda imitation. This leads into a bit about alcohol and what drinking different kinds lead to and the show ends with follow up story to the classic Racist Gift Basket routine from a few years back.

Coming away from the special, the change from denying his popularity to embracing and acknowledging it can be a bit jarring to fans. But the routine is very funny and Iglesias is still at the top of his game.
