Rebel Moon: Part Two Is "A Nonstop Action Roller-Coaster Ride"

Rebel Moon co-writer Kurt Johnstad says that Part Two is "a nonstop action roller-coaster ride of twists and turns. And the ending is spectacular."

Article Summary

  • Co-writer Kurt Johnstad promises Rebel Moon Part Two is a dynamic action adventure.
  • The sequel is set to deliver a finale that's vastly different from its predecessor.
  • Despite Rebel Moon's poor initial reception, its bold continuation presses forward.
  • Johnstad teases an ultimate showdown with exceptional and surprising turns.

It doesn't matter that Rebel Moon is underperforming both critically and commercially because the sequel is coming whether we like it or not. The first trailer for Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver dropped over the weekend, but we are starting to get a vague idea about what exactly this part two is going to be like, and it sounds like every other part two that has this sort of structure. The first part is almost entirely set up with minimal payoff, and the second film might as well be a feature-length third act. Kurt Johnstad was a co-writer on the scripts for Rebel Moon and has worked with director Zack Snyder in the past; he was asked by The Hollywood Reporter how Part One and Part Two differentiate.

"I would say that it's definitely its own movie, and it's a very different movie," Johnstad explained. "It's not an assembly of the team. The team is built, and now it's why they fight. I think [the PG-13 cut] is two hours, or maybe it's more, but it's a nonstop action roller-coaster ride of twists and turns. And the ending is spectacular. We hope things are going to turn out the way they do, but it's a fantastic, fun ride that's very different than [Part One]."

It remains to be seen how Netflix will react to the critical and commercial underperformance of Rebel Moon in terms of its partnership with Snyder. Still, we can expect everyone to put on a happy face and continue to spin "strong debuts" even in the face of basic numbers until the director's cut of Part Two drops. From there, we'll know what will happen to future projects in this universe. In terms of structure for these two movies, it turned out exactly how people thought it would. Once we learn this was a true part one and part two that would make one complete project and not a first movie followed by a sequel, it might help people temper their expectations if they haven't watched the movie yet. Or they might decide not to bother until the second movie comes out; that is something you risk when you release half a film like this.
